Childrens' Reading Club

INTRODUCTION

We are trying to start up a children’s book club to encourage the younger members of the community to get to know one another and share their interests.  Ultimately, we hope to have a series of book clubs aimed at different age groups, where they can be run by the parents of the children involved.  This would also prove to be a great way of encouraging the adults within the community to get to know one another too!

My name is Lorraine, I live within the Trinity Mead Development and am happy to help get book clubs started.  I can be there to start up clubs and help with ideas on how to run them and how to include fun activities too!

WHAT IS THE BOOK CLUB?

Whatever you want it to be. We think it will be a small group of similarly aged children getting together every 4-6 weeks to share a book and play games, have fun and just get to know each other.  Hopefully, they (YOU) will then spread the word and more book clubs can start up!  Enjoying books is so much more than just sitting reading, we can act, sing, write, draw, make, do, dance and play too!  Whatever you want really!

Some ideas we have come up with so far!

  • Bake some food that links to the book and share when we meet up.
  • Make bookmarks.
  • Make puppets or masks.
  • Write letters to the author or illustrator.
  • Role play scenes from the book or favourite characters.
  • Make costumes/jewellery associated with a theme or character from a book.
  • Take it in turn to recommend or choose the next book to read at the book club.

WHERE WILL WE MEET?

We have not decided yet and it may depend on the age and size of the group.  But perhaps taking it in turns at each other’s houses is a good place to start.  In the summer, we could sit in the park or in someone’s back garden.  We have to ensure that everyone is safe and in the care of their parent/carer where this is appropriate to the age group.  This could form part of the discussion of the first group meet.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I WANT TO JOIN?

Initially we would like to hear from children aged between 10-13 years to start up the first club.  If you are interested send an email to me, Lorraine, at the below address and I will respond!

To find out more and arrange a first meet, you must ask your Parent/Carer to send an email to me at the address below.

Alternatively if you are younger or older and would also like to become involved in a book club, let me know and we can keep you informed of what is happening and when we are ready to start up more clubs.

Also tell you friends too!
